Noting the spread of meta-analyses of the same studies where the individual studies are weighted differentlyhave wildly varying odds returned from trillions to one, to indistinguishable from chanceDeBakcsy argues that this undermines the reliance on meta-analysis in the work since they lack standardization. This includes telepathy, remote viewing, perception across time, psychic interactions with both inanimate matter and living organisms, and even the application of psi with respect to gambling.

Courtney Brown | Book Review of “The Conscious Universe” by Dean Radin

But this is true of many well-tested scientific theories that we take for granted: This book is very thorough. No claim should be dismissed out-of-hand or rejected simply because it seems absurd or stupid, or because of the motivations, lack of scientific qualifications, or moral character of its proponents.

On the other hand, it is true that parapsychologists have come a long way in responding to the criticisms of skeptics and that their work has been published in a several mainstream scientific journals. The evidence suggests that while many aspects of mental functioning are undoubtedly related to brain structure and electrochemical activity, there is also something else happening, something very interesting.

Stage 3 begins when the mainstream realizes that the idea is not only important, but its effects are much stronger and more pervasive than previously imagined. I don’t feel like picking it back up. During my studies to become a psychologist I had the opportunity to take a course on paranormality where this book was used as study material.

If you are truly interested to see why this book is as bad as I found it, please see the consxious I provided. The author doesn’t advocate his work in the field, but rather provides a cross-section of the work in this field. In addition to the research summaries, I think Radin’s “Field Guide to Skepticism” and the following chapter is a highlight. Radin explains things in detail, and often to the point of overkill. This is that book.

DeBakcsy contends that the ARO 12m Radio Telescope perhaps fits the best, but it cknscious also different in several aspects to the hniverse object. Still, Conscious Universe and Radin’s more recent books is worth your time if you want to get up to speed on the research.

Even Richard Wiseman, a noted skeptic, has admitted univetse the evidence for some Psi experiments is very good, by the standards of any other science. A claim should be accepted or rejected only if the evidence warrants it. To be sure, the meta-analyses he cites sure sound impressive, but I still don’t really understand what they mean.

Susan Blackmore, who worked as a parapsychologist for many years, notes in her book Consciousness: A Critical Thinker’s Toolkit. Radin makes it clear that there are kniverse cases of replication conscuous studies that have found evidence for the existence of psi. First, there have been a great many under-publicized lab studies of psi over the past thirty years or so, and these have 1 been rigorously designed as double blind studies that take into account criticisms of earlier, less rigorous work, and 2 employed new computer and video technology, completely automated to exclude the possibility of contamination by the experimenters or subjects.

Radin was elected President of the Parapsychological Nuiverse in,and and has published a number of articles and parapsychological papers supporting the existence of paranormal phenomena, as well as two books directed to a popular audience: I recommend that anyone interested in the concept of consciousness as it relates to physics and the physical world consider this book.

Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action. Aug 19, Leanne Curtis rated it liked it Shelves: The first is to analyze data involved in an experiment.
